As we go into the fourth week of the spring semester, all of my classes have been picking up, and time management is the most important during this process. This week, I joined my fellow interns in a field trip to the fifth floor of the library to view the UCF special collections. We learned about the history of each member of the team's experience in library science, archiving, and their position within the collections. I was not aware that there is a profession specifically for repairing books only, which was the most interesting topic that I learned from our conversations. I am not too familiar with library sciences, so it was good to learn about multiple sides of preservation. It might be a position that might be of interest to me if I were looking to gain experience in another field, so I will keep it in mind. After the introductions, we were able to go into the main archival rooms where the various items were included in two separate groups. The main objects were books, of course, as well as paintings, and maps. After the fifth-floor visit, we went to the second floor to experience the Goliath that was the machinery inside the back room of the second floor. I have been to the library a million times, but I was not expecting the huge room to be there the entire time. It was a big shock to me and left an impression, and I know that the interns I was talking with also did not know about this seemingly secret room.
We have not yet started on our work for the bicentennial, but there was a meeting on Tuesday about the exhibit for the internship leads. Therefore, I do not have much to update on. Next week, we will be visiting the archives collection in the library with just our bicentennial exhibit group. I expect to know more about the project once the tour is completed. I am a bit nervous that we haven’t started yet, but I know the logistics of an in-person exhibit take time, I just like scheduling work ahead of time to know what to prepare for. I also understand that the exhibit is taking place over multiple semesters, so the deadline doesn’t seem too strict. In this, our team will be skipping the virtual meeting on the 11th to accommodate the archives visit.
