Week 13 Blog

Apologies for the shorter blog for this week. While we wait for and work on the narrative feedback, we haven't been able to make much progress. I attended the weekly meeting on Wednesday, where we went through what everyone was working on. This week was very similar to last week. We received the feedback from our narrative texts, luckily, I did not receive much to work on. Which is good, since I was nervous about the results after waiting for a week. Next week, we will meet u

Week 12 Blog

As we approach the end of the semester, the realization of graduation is hitting very hard, but I know it will be exciting for the next chapter of my life. I aim to apply for the master's program for next spring, so this next semester will be a good break to focus on working and continuing to grow my resume. This week, we had our weekly team meeting, where we discussed what everyone has been working on. I'm considering participating in the story day, but my schedule has been

Week 11 Blog

After spring break it was time to get back to work on the exhibit. This week, we focused on finishing the rough draft for our narrative texts for the exhibit. My narrative text topics include Bicentennial in the household, the food case, Bicentennial events and activities, and physical media. We got to choose each topic we wanted to work on, which made it easier to start writing. Usually, when writing, the start for me is the hardest part; however, once I start to get an intr

Week 9 Blog

This week, we did not have a field trip, instead we had a regular Zoom meeting on Wednesday to give an update on what everyone has been working on. It was interesting hearing what people in other groups have been working on, such as in-person interviews. We also discussed what we believe to be unspoken rules in the workplace, for example, knowing how to balance work and life. For example, higher-ups sending emails outside of work hours. Obviously, I don’t have much of a work

Week 8 Blog

It is now midterm season, and we are getting closer to Spring Break. It is getting harder to believe that I am coming up on my last few months of my undergrad, especially graduating in 4 years after transferring from a public college, when a lot of my credits were not transferred over. I should probably take a break at some point! For the internship this week, we took our last field trip to the Hannibal Square Heritage Center on Wednesday, which might have been my favorite fi

Week 7 Blog

As we get to the middle of the semester, things are now ramping up! This week at our Wednesday meeting, we had the privilege to chat with Dr. Robkin (my preservation professor) and hear about her journey through public history. She spoke about how her original intention for her career was not in public history, but in archeology, later realizing that there are a lot of ties between archeology and public history. She spoke about her role at UCF, the opportunities that History

Week 6 Blog

As we approach the middle of the semester, we continue to go on field trips to further our ideas on the options of what we can do with our history degrees. Going on these trips, my confidence in my path grows for preservation. This week, we visited the Orange County Regional History Center and explored its exhibits. Starting off, we visited the conference room and discussed the paths that the employees took towards working at the center. Neither of them has had a background i

This week, the Bicentennial exhibit team visited the collections for the first time as a group with Dr. Crepeau. Therefore, we were unable to join the virtual meeting that also took place on Wednesday at noon. I had a great time going through the collection and thinking about what would work for the exhibit displays. First, we started on the fifth floor of the library and took a look at their items in the Special Library Collections room, in the same location that the whole i

Week 4 Blog

As we go into the fourth week of the spring semester, all of my classes have been picking up, and time management is the most important during this process. This week, I joined my fellow interns in a field trip to the fifth floor of the library to view the UCF special collections. We learned about the history of each member of the team's experience in library science, archiving, and their position within the collections. I was not aware that there is a profession specifically

Week 3 Blog

This week, I joined my fellow interns in participating in the scanning field trip at CHDR. At first, we were given a tour of the area, then went into the larger room where we had met previously. We learned how to use the big scanner for artifacts, as well as the smaller side with the portable scanners. While focusing on a cookbook from the 1950s, we were given the challenge to search for a particular author within the book. We were unable to find them so we needed a bit of he

Week 2 Blog

This week, we continued our training with transcribing and metadata. I completed the transcription practice before the meeting on Wednesday and reviewed the articles. The practice was a good review. During the meeting, we had a Microsoft Teams exercise in which we created our own folders and added images within them. After, we had a metadata exercise to practice the metadata sheets. It was good to have a refresher on the sheets after not making one for a semester, but once I

Week 1 Blog

My name is Brooke Kaye, I am a senior history major in my last semester, and this is my second internship within the UCF history program. This was the first week of the new semester, therefore, a new internship experience. I have chosen to be a part of the Bicentennial exhibit in order to work on a physical exhibit and help with researching the topics at hand. On Wednesday, we had our first meeting with all of the interns together before we got started on our own projects. We
