It is now midterm season, and we are getting closer to Spring Break. It is getting harder to believe that I am coming up on my last few months of my undergrad, especially graduating in 4 years after transferring from a public college, when a lot of my credits were not transferred over. I should probably take a break at some point! For the internship this week, we took our last field trip to the Hannibal Square Heritage Center on Wednesday, which might have been my favorite field trip that we’ve done because it was less pressure and I am more familiar with the area. I went to Winter Park for school, and I would go to Park Avenue growing up on the weekends, as opposed to downtown Orlando, which I chose to avoid often. My dad also went to Winter Park for school (if he decided to show up), and he would tell me stories about how gentrified the area had gotten while growing up. To finally see images of what it looked like before was very eye opening for me. During the summer, I did a lot of research on Hungerford High School, and since Winter Park is closer to Eatonville, there were more connections throughout the images that we saw, and several references to the school. The downstairs featured an exhibit called “The Sage Project”, which focuses on oral histories of the Elder community in Hannibal Square. After the tour, we had a Q&A for the manager, who is also a UCF student, and the lead Archivist. We learned about their backgrounds and their journeys that led them to the center. Later on, we went outside to the park to see the Hannibal Square Memory Wall, portraying the African American community crossing the railroad tracks to vote.
In terms of the Bicentennial Exhibit, Sam completed the design for the floor plan. The plan focuses on what will be best suited for the guests' experience. The display is very similar to the exhibit currently in the space; however, we will be moving the tablet adjacent to the television to create a better experience. The current placement is right next to the television, which I believe to be too much screen in one location and could be too overwhelming. Each case, as stated in past blogs, will have its own mini theme that will relate to an overarching larger theme. Next week, we will be focusing on creating the plan for the digital component. I believe that the information tree structure in a Prezi presentation will be the desired format.
